Bertrand de Goth, appointed archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299, received on this occasion the vineyards of La Mothe, property located in Pessac. It manages the application domain and bigger. Appointed in 1305 by the conclave to succeed Benedict XI, he became pope under the name of Clement V. Then he had to leave the domain that belongs to the Archdiocese of Bordeaux and takes the name "Pope Clement." The domain will be well managed with continuity and quality for almost five centuries. The domain, put in the public domain by the Revolution, see the owners succeed.


First half of the twentieth century, the domain declined, and it is saved from extinction by winemaker Paul Montagne who acquired it in 1939 and gradually allows him to regain his rank with the classification in red as Grand Cru Ranked Graves in 1959.


32.5 ha vineyard extends over a mixture of gravelly sandy soils and clay-limestone soils rich in iron limestone subsoil. The red grape varieties (30ha) consists of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%) and Merlot (40%), white (2.5 ha) of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon (45% each) complemented by Muscadelle (10%) . The average age of the vines is 40 in red and 18 in white. Defense vines follows the principles of sustainable agriculture.
